VIDEO: Music and Copyright in the Digital Era: DAVID BYRNE in Conversation with CHRIS RUEN
By New York Public Library -- In How Music Works, Byrne explores how profoundly music is shaped by its time and place, and how the advent of recording technology in the twentieth century forever changed our relationship to playing, performing, and listening to music.

Creative Commons Celebrates Ten Years
By Terry Hart -- Should creators use Creative Commons licenses? The idea behind the licenses is a good one: copyright gives creators the choice of how and when to exploit the products of their labor. But unfortunately, despite the ease in using the licenses - or perhaps because of this ease - creators and users should take note of some concerns raised about them that urge caution.

Twitter and Nielsen Pair up to Publish New "Social TV" Ratings
By Gerry Shih -- The new measurement, dubbed the "Nielsen Twitter TV Rating," seeks to tap into the stream of viewer commentary and armchair musings generated on "second screens" - the smartphones and tablets perched on Twitter users' laps while they watch, say, Monday Night Football or the latest episode of Homeland on their TVs.

What Social Media Has To Do With Record Sales
By Victor Hu & Liv Bul -- The ability to track and catalog all of this activity has evolved only in the last few years and begs the question: does this social media activity actually lead to album or track sales? Which of the countless networks actually matter? Radio spins have long been considered the industry standard for predicting sales, and with good reason, but is that still the case?

Shazam Launches New Interface Plus Offline Mode
By Eliot Van Buskirk -- One reason people love Music ID apps is their immediacy: You hold your phone up in the air, tag a song, and then you know, more or less immediately, what that song is....Today, Shazam added an interesting new feature...[P.S. If you are the owner of a facility that plays music for public consumption ... you'd better be sure if you tell the ASCAP rep that you don't use any songs licensed by ASCAP.]

Tech companies have made billions supporting the illegal exploitation of our cultural past while ruthlessly pursuing the dismantling of incentives creators need to fashion our cultural future.

Are We Becoming Cyborgs?
By Susan Greenfield, Evgeny Morozov and Maria Popova -- Since broadband began its inexplorable spread at the start of the millennium, Internet use has expanded at a cosmic rate...We have changed how we interact. Are we also changing what we are?
Congress Is Losing a Star: Howard Berman
By Matt Gerson -- ...when you hear people talk about Howard Berman's decency, his mastery of substance and nuance, his ability to distill complex issues, his willingness to listen to all sides, the creativity that enables him to craft workable compromises, all punctuated by courtesy, respect and good humor, it's easy to conclude that he would have been a welcome addition to that gathering in Philadelphia, too - just as he has been to the institution he has served so well for the past 30 years. [Howard is being replaced by a Congressman who, after 16 years in the House, has successfully gotten two bills passed...both naming high schools! Sadly, Howard's loss is a blistering indictment of - and a strategy confirming reason for - negative advertising and grotesque sums of money in politics. DK]
Riffing on the Highs and Lows of the Sonic Landscape
By Mark Swed and Randall Roberts -- Times pop critic Randall Roberts and classical critic Mark Swed discuss listening to music in the digital age, tackling issues such as quality of sound, streaming and Apple's long reach.
What It Really Feels Like When Someone Steals Your Unfinished Work...
By Paul Resnikoff -- If you're among the 99.9 percent of artists who are building or otherwise up-and-coming, this isn't a problem. But for those with strong followings, theft of unfinished content and pre-release leaks are a serious and often tragic issue. Because once something is stolen, or worse, released half-baked, it can dramatically set an artist back creatively - sometimes, forever.
Alex Day And The Dilemma Of The DIY Pop Star
By Clyde Smith -- Last year Alex Day's Christmas campaign took his single "Forever Yours" to #4 on the UK singles chart earning him a Guinness World Record for highest charting single by an unsigned artist and a lot of press. This year he's building on his success as a DIY pop musician and going for #1 on the UK singles charts.
There's Life in iTunes Yet - Global Expansion Is Good News for Labels
By Robert Andrews -- Music labels can expect prolonged life for the track download format to come from new overseas markets...
SoundCloud's Massive Refresh Is A Big Deal For Web Audio
By John Paul Titlow -- After months of testing in private beta, the next iteration of theSoundCloud Web app has been relaunched. The result is a stickier, more social experience that bolsters SoundCloud's position as the YouTube of audio.
Prayer, or Pivot? Turntable.fm Is Now Trying a Radically Different Programming Approach...
By Paul Resnikoff -- If only "embracing failure" was as easy as Silicon Valley makes it out to be. Because it seems that all the quick-footed success of Turntable.fm could be hamstringing this company's ability to quit the race, and stop burning cash. But wait: are we quitting on Rocky too soon?
Text Messaging Celebrates 20th Anniversary
By Salvador Rodriguez -- You might not believe it, but text messaging is already past its teen years.
How To Play Funk
By Bobby Owsinski -- Here's a great clip from Herbie Hancock's Rock School series about how to play funk. It features some greats like Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins and Nile Rogers as they show in slow motion how to bring the funk.

Elishema - HoodCheaters

Elishema

by InterNetics eMagazine on December 6th, 2012
Often being compared vocally to a younger version of the late Whitney Houston, and having the performance dynamics of Mary J Blige.

R&B Hip Hop Chicago native Elishema whose name comes from the biblical text, meaning the heavenly father will listen, is certainly befitting of such a name. Gifted with an angelic and enchanting voice that commands attention, Elishema chooses to use her talents as a singer, songwriter/ part-time rapper to impart love and wisdom through music which she refers to as “music of empowerment,” empowering her listeners to positive action. Infusing elements of Pop, Rock, Soul, R&B, and Hip Hop in her music she strives to craft feel good songs that are not only pleasing to the ears, but carries a deeper message that resonates with the soul and gives one strength, inner happiness, peace of mind, and realness.
Elishema’s musical journey began when she was very young, where she’d often crash her parent’s lavish parties and enjoin everyone in attendance to listen to yet another song she had written. She says “I was only like five years old at the time, but found myself drawn to the music, it became like my best friend, I’d spend all my time singing and writing songs.”
Being in a household of music enthusiast, Elishema found herself being exposed to lots of great artist, but was mostly influenced by artist like Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Patti Labelle, and Brandy, who all inspired her to be the performer she is today. Finding her calling at a very young age and backed by the support of her family, Elishema embarked on a journey to share her love for music with the world, doing everything within her power to develop her craft and gain exposure.
Throughout the years Elishema has had the opportunity to grace the stage at many venues like the Rosemont convention center, Chicago Theater, and a host of others, touching the hearts of thousands of music lovers with her voice, and dynamic performances. In 2011 she was highlighted in the BET Lens On Talent contest and a Chicago finalist in the Budweiser Myspace Opening Act contest. She has also been recognized by Marshal Thompson of the Legendary Chi-Lites who has been quoted as saying “She’s going to be hotter than Beyonce.”
In 2011 Elishema released her first independent album which was a follow up to her controversial single “Sophisticated Man” which was well received by many blogs and radio stations. “New Beginnings” was a 16 track album that combined a mixture of R&B, Hip Hop and Pop songs centered on themes for inspiration.
As she moves forward with a new single being released in 2012 entitled Hood Cheaters, Elishema intends to continue her quest to impart wisdom. Hood Cheaters is a song written to shed light on the ways of unfaithful companions in loving relationships, and her approach to handling them. In 2013 and beyond with her sophomore album underway centered around R&B love songs Elishema seeks to continuously rediscover and reinvent herself as an artist, and continue to impart warmth, and well-being through her music that goes beyond the surface of your skin to really touch your heart and soothe your soul.

ASCAP Daily Brief powered by The Dean's List

This daily email, compiled by ASCAP Board member, music publisher and songwriter Dean Kay, cuts through the media clutter to bring you links to the most relevant news and commentary on the rapidly evolving music industry and how it affects your future livelihood. Now the ASCAP Daily Brief can be accessed on the Headlines page of ASCAP.com and in the ASCAP RSS Feed.

Tech companies have made billions supporting the illegal exploitation of our cultural past while ruthlessly pursuing the dismantling of incentives creators need to fashion our cultural future.

The Artists, United, Can Never Be Defeated
By Chris Castle -- Without great songs there are no great records and without great records there is no Pandora. And that's the fact.
Radio Broadcasters Get an Earful at Internet Radio Fairness Hearing
By Alex Pham -- In a Congressional hearing that was supposed to be about Internet radio royalties, lawmakers and speakers instead spent a good portion of their time taking aim at the National Broadcasters Association for not having to pay performance royalties to artists (although the Internet-radio companies supposedly at the center of the debate took plenty of lumps as well).
Techies Tell Congress High Music Royalties Hurt Artists
By Greg Sandoval -- Representatives from Pandora and venture capital company note there isn't a single profitable digital music service and they blame high royalties. [If i wanted to open a waffle and eggroll restaurant, I'd probably include the cost of waffles and eggrolls in my business plan. It's really idiotic to blame a bad business model on your suppliers!]
Everything, Everywhere, All the Time
By Faza -- I think that I might take the opportunity to explain to the Gentleman from Utah - and to everyone watching at home - why on the internet, there can usually be only one.
iTunes 11: Be Very Afraid, Spotify...
By Paul Resnikoff -- Apple may already be winning the war over streaming, we just don't know it yet. And part of the reason is that streaming and downloading are slowly becoming the same thing.
